In our modern world dominated by sedentary activities, from desk jobs to leisurely couch sessions, the impact of excessive sitting on our health is undeniable. Research continues to highlight the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of finding a balance between sitting, standing, activity, and sleep for optimal well-being.
A recent collaborative study led by Australian and international researchers has unveiled key insights into the ideal daily routine that promotes health and longevity. Analyzing the behaviors of over 2,000 participants aged 40-75, the study identified a recommended breakdown of daily activities:
- Six hours of sitting
- Five hours and 10 minutes of standing
- Two hours and 10 minutes of light-to-moderate physical activity
- Two hours and 10 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity
- Eight hours and 20 minutes of sleep
The research underscores a clear trend: reducing sedentary time and increasing standing, movement, and sleep correlate with improved health outcomes. Notably, participants with type 2 diabetes experienced enhanced blood sugar control when replacing sitting time with physical activity, particularly light activities.

Dr. Raju Vaishya, Senior Consultant in Orthopedics and Joint Replacement at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, emphasizes the significance of personalized approaches to daily routines. While general guidelines are valuable, individual circumstances such as age, health status, occupation, and preferences must be considered.
“For instance, an elderly person with limited mobility may benefit from frequent transitions between sitting and standing, while a physically active individual may require longer exercise periods,” explains Dr. Vaishya.
Furthermore, sleep recommendations should be tailored to individual circadian rhythms and sleep quality. A personalized approach, guided by healthcare professionals and self-monitoring, ensures that health behaviors are sustainable and effective.
