This year’s most massive tropical storm Typhoon Mangkhut killed four people and forced evacuation of more than 3.11 million people in the southern region of mainland China following leaving a trail of destruction in Philippines to Hong Kong.
The storm hit Jiangmen City in Guangdong province on Sunday at 5 p.m. with a wind speed of up to 162 km per hour. Falling trees killed three and one person died from collapsing construction materials.
According to report about 50,000 fishing boats have been called back, more than 29,000 construction sites’ work suspended, hundreds of tourist spots closed and over 3.11 million people relocated in the province. Train services have been suspended Guangdong and Hainan provinces.
Mangkhut is currently sweeping through southern China’s coast and the provinces of Guangdong. On Tuesday strong winds and heavy rains are expected to continue, said Met department.
Even though the worst of Mangkhut seems to have passed but people are warned to remain alert as floods and landslides may take place. In Philippines it sparked landslides and other destructions killing at least 65 people and many are still missing.
The damages in Hong Kong too were immense with trees falling and roofs getting torn.
