Turkish currency Lira has fallen about forty percent in 2018 and lately sell-off of it in religious and nationalist terms have made the situation worse just ahead of major Muslim holiday. In a pre-recorded address President Tayyip Erdogan said an attack on their economy was similar to strike against the country’s flag.
The four-day Eid al-Adha festival is beginning Tuesday and currency crisis just ahead of the holiday means bringing the country as well as people to the knees. The sell-off of Turkish currency is spread to other market currencies too.
Erdogan said, “The attack on our economy has absolutely no difference from attacks on our call to prayer and our flag. The goal is the same. The goal is to bring Turkey and the Turkish people to their knees, to take it prisoner.”
Presently the relationship between US and Turkey has turned sour and earlier today several gunshots were fired at the US Embassy in capital from a vehicle.
Meanwhile, appeal of release of American paster Andrew Brunson has been rejected by a Turkish court and it is sure to ignite further dispute between presidents of both the countries.
Brunson is an evangelical Christian missionary from North Carolina and for two decades have been living in Turkey and a flashpoint between the two countries.
