The recycled clothing stores in West Auckland are far cheaper than the ones in the city. These three stores are one-stop shops with a great selection.
If you’re a lazy shopper, it’s a bonus when you find large stores with plenty of racks to peruse. There are three great stores that fit the bill in West Auckland, and which are close to each other. You can easily rack up a couple of hours of recycled clothing treasure hunting at the mammoth Save Mart Henderson, the lesser known Merlins Recycled Clothing in Glen Eden, and the family-sized Glen Eden Salvation Army store.
Find other good Auckland secondhand and vintage clothing stores here.
Save Mart Henderson
Be prepared to easily spend a couple of hours searching through dozens of orderly racks of recycled clothing at Henderson’s Save Mart. Housed in a huge warehouse, it’s impossible to not find something that takes your fancy. If you can’t face the thought of flicking through all the racks, head straight for the dozen or so racks of Designer Wear including brands such as Decjuba, Moochi, Billabong, Nike, Karen Walker, Jacqui E, Annah Stretton, and countless others.
If you are after retro gear, try the Retro section. Retro swimwear lives with the mainstream swimwear in the swimwear section. And if you’re after bodysuits or leotards, you are more likely to find them in the lingerie section.
The Save Mart chain is a huge operation so the clothing is not as cheap as the little church shops and Salvation Army stores. Clothes at Save Mart Henderson range from $4 – $10 on the standard racks through to approximately $10 – $30 for the designer racks.
Try to shop on the weekdays because, during the weekend, there are often queues for the 10 to 15 changing rooms. There are no public toilets here also so if you are with small children, it can be tricky.
Merlins Recycled Clothing in Glen Eden
Merlins Recycled Clothing is housed in a large property on the main thoroughfare through Glen Eden. They have a good range of recycled clothing spread over approximately 30 racks. Racks are divided into women, men, and childrenswear. There are a couple of racks of designer wear. And if you are after gym gear, this store is a good option as they have more than their fair share of recycled fitness clothing for a store this size.
The store is spacious, with a great selection of party dresses, both modern, retro, and vintage. If you are in a mind to convert wedding dresses into party dresses, there is a huge selection of wedding dresses to choose from. There’s also a generous selection of gorgeous winter coats to choose from, all at reasonable prices.
Average costs range from $5 through to $20. Weekdays are quiet and I imagine it gets quite a bit busier during the weekend. They only have two changing rooms so try to get there during the week if possible.
Glen Eden Salvation Army Family Store
Like all Salvation Army stores, clothes are donated so you’ll find the cheapest recycled clothing here. The Glen Eden store is a family store so it’s larger than the average Salvation Army store. There are approximately 12 – 15 racks of clothing here. You are unlikely to pay more than $10 for a single item with most clothes in the $4 – $8 range.
I’ve found some great retro pieces here in the past because there are a lot of clothes from the eighties and nineties. Leave your car parked here and walk the 100 metres or so, across to Merlins Recycled Clothing.
