Indian Premier League becomes prime attraction for advertisers and marketers each year in Springs because of enormous visibility of the twenty-20 tournament and popularity across demographics. Last year the Star TV network, which owns the IPL’s digital rights, reveals had 603 viewers including 202 million streaming on its Hotstar mobile app.
Hotstar is fast gaining popularity in India and other countries. The platform set a global sports streaming record with peak viewership of 10.7 million.
This IPL season Hotstar is targeting a viewership of 300 million and recent data reveals in first three days of the tournament the platform garnered 219 million viewers.
According to media buyers Hotstar may make revenue of Rs 400 crore in IPL 2019. The total earnings of Star India in IPL 2018 was Rs 2,000 crore. This year the figure is estimated to be more than Rs 2,500 in the 50-day league.
Other companies who have rushed to make some money includes Dream11, Flipkart-owned PhonePe, Swiggy, Amazon Pay, MakeMyTrip and Mobile Premier League.
PhonePe is the official co-presenting sponsor of this season’s IPL. It has lately raised Rs 743.5 crore from Walmart and has roped Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan as brand ambassador4. It is learned the fresh funding is being used in the promotional campaigns around the IPL.
The company said, “Cricket is the most popular sport in the country, and IPL is the biggest sporting event of the year. Thus, we feel it is a great platform for us to launch our new brand campaign with Aamir and create awareness about the PhonePe platform.”
