Causes
- Sinusitis is usually caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungus. A common cold can lead to sinusitis where the sinuses become swollen and lead to infections. Seasonal allergies will occur when the body is exposed to allergens such as pollen or dust, the sinuses become swollen and block the path leading to sinusitis.
- Smoking increases the risk of sinus infections, tobacco smoke irritates the nasal airways, causing the body to produce more mucus, which can lead to allergies or cold sinusitis.
Treatment
- Sinusitis can be treated in different ways depending on the severity. The primary treatment for these infections is decongestants, nasal irrigation with saline solution, antibiotics, and drinking plenty of water.
- Intranasal steroid sprays, oral histamine tablets, and antihistamine sprays are prescribed by doctors as part of treatment.
- Nasal cleansing using saline solutions containing additional medications is also an effective tool for treating sinus infections.
- Surgery to fix the problem when no other treatments are successful in controlling the infections.
Prevention is the key
- Adequate awareness and precaution can prevent sinusitis.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick with colds or infections.
- Wash hands frequently with soap before and after meals.
- If you have any allergies, keep them under control by following the doctor’s instructions.
- The lungs and nasal passages should not be exposed to pollutants such as tobacco smoke which can cause irritation and inflammation.
