Saudi Arabia to begin internal probe in Khashoggi case 1

Countering to the severe allegations into the disappearance of journalist Khashoggi a Saudi Arabia official said has begun an internal investigation and could hold people accountable.

It is learned King Salman has ordered public prosecutor to investigate fate of missing Jamal Khashoggi, who is claimed by Turkey to have been murdered inside Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul as he was never seen coming out of the campus after entering.

Both Saudi Arabia and Turkey have said to be cooperating in a joint investigation earlier, but the latest announcement seems to be a separate inquiry.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has said to be dispatching Secretary of State Michael Pompeo to the kingdom for discussion and added the king has denied knowledge of the circumstances of disappearance in a telephonic discussion.

Experts believe the case may spark geopolitical crisis as Saudi Arabia has been demanded for an explanation in the case even though Saudi officials have repeatedly said the journalists left the consulate unharmed denying all the allegations of kidnapping and murder.

However, the internal investigation would bring some other narrative in the case.

London School of Economics Steffen Hertog said, “It’s either going to be a partial admission of guilt while trying to absolve the top level, or they’ll say they haven’t found anything… This, I think, depends on the crown prince. So far, he seems to have been quite headstrong on the whole thing and he hasn’t backed down.”
