India is a holy country famous for shrines and ancient temples across the globe. Especially, the Himalayan region receives the highest number of tourists from all around the world. Pilgrims travel across the seas to visit the temples and sacred lands in this region and there are many glaciers, holy waters that run through this region but there is also one mysterious place where people are often said to find skulls and bones.
Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the Roopkund lake beds at an altitude of 5029 m above sea level. The lake is covered with snow for most of the year. But once the snow melts, the whole atmosphere changes into a hostile house. With hundreds of skeletons floating and scattered around the surface you could only imagine how one would feel like.

These skeletons were first discovered by the British Forest Guard in 1942. But over the years there have been attempts to unravel the mystery behind these skeletons. These skeletons are related to Kashmir, the locals believe that the army’s General Zorawar Singh. While returning from the Tibetan War in 1841, was reportedly trapped in a blizzard and lost his life in the middle of the Himalayas.
And another legend states that when Kanauj raja Jasdhaval, his wife Balamba, his servants, and a dance troupe went to visit the Nanda Devi temple, and all of them were mysteriously found dead speculations are that the entire group would have died due to the big blizzard but no one knows.
However, research conducted by a team of scientists in 2014 found that all 200 skeletons in the frozen roopkund Lake belonged to a 9th-century Indian tribe, all of whom died in a massive hailstorm. This unravels the mystery behind it.
Sadly the scientists concluded that the hailstones had hit the back of the heads of the dead.
So that no injuries were found on other parts of their body. Scientists have concluded that this was an accident without any war or weapon involvement yet some believe that there might be some dark secret behind this story that nobody knows.
Every year thousands of tourists and adventurers come to take in this mysterious Roopkund. Although the snow-capped mountains around the lake give a beautiful feeling to the onlookers, the shiver starts running through their spine, trembling them to the core when they see the horrible sight of the skeletons floating in the river.
