Indian Parliament was rocked with raising voices of House members Monday suggesting death penalty to rape convicts. Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said it is high time to rethink whether such convicts would be allowed to file mercy plea.
The death sentences of 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case convicts have not yet carried out and one of them have submitted a mercy petition to President Ram Nath Govind.
Naidu added, “What is required is not a new bill; what is required is political will, administrative skill and then change of mindset and then go for the kill of the social evil.”
MPs of both the Houses had raised voices during the Zero Hour in the wake of gang rape and murder of a veterinary doctor on November 28 in Hyderabad. They demanded death penalty, castration and public lynching of the rape accused.
Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan led the charge and demanded a definitive answer from the government saying the accused of such heinous crimes should be shamed in public and lynched.
She added that if the government is not able to provide security to women, public will give judgment.
Mrs. Bachchan further continued that the personnel who were in-charge of the area where such crime has occurred need to be accountable.
The 26-year-old veterinarian was gang raped and murdered by four men on the night of Wednesday and Thursday. Her body was charred under a culvert off National Highway 44 in Chatanpally bridge near Shadnagar.
Meanwhile, defence minister Rajnath Singh said the incident has brought shame to the country.
