Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term this Saturday, following the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The NDA secured 293 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 272, largely thanks to the crucial support from key allies like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) (JDU).
Chandrababu Naidu, leader of the TDP, and Nitish Kumar of the JDU, whose combined 28 seats are vital for the NDA, will be prominent figures at Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. Their support has been instrumental in ensuring the stability of the NDA coalition.
Earlier this week, NDA leaders gathered at Modi’s residence to review the election results and discuss the formation of the new government. During this meeting, Modi was unanimously chosen as the alliance leader and praised for his leadership and efforts in nation-building. The alliance partners highlighted Modi’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) and affirmed their commitment to this goal, appreciating his role in elevating India’s global status.
Despite speculation that the opposition INDIA bloc might attempt to woo Naidu and Kumar, the BJP has secured written letters of support from both leaders. This move effectively counters any opposition plans to form an alternative government. The TDP won 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, while the JDU secured 12 seats in Bihar, making their support crucial for the NDA’s majority.
The INDIA bloc, which includes Congress and other opposition parties, finished with 232 seats, 40 short of the majority mark. While the bloc mounted a significant challenge to the BJP, it ultimately fell short. Congress, in particular, had its best performance since 2009, winning 99 seats.
On Tuesday, Modi met with President Droupadi Murmu to formally resign, paving the way for the dissolution of the current government on June 16. He has been asked to continue as caretaker Prime Minister until the new government is appointed. In his final cabinet meeting, Modi downplayed any concerns about his party’s performance, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to good governance.
In his victory speech, Modi expressed gratitude to the people of India for their continued faith in the NDA. He assured them that his government would keep working hard to meet their aspirations and build on the progress of the last decade.
As Modi prepares for his third term, the support from coalition partners like Naidu and Kumar will be critical in navigating the complexities of Indian politics. Their cooperation underscores the importance of alliances in achieving political stability and advancing national development.
