In a significant announcement, the Narendra Modi-led central government has appointed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). Set to assume office on June 30, Lt Gen Dwivedi brings with him a distinguished career spanning over 39 years, marked by exemplary service and leadership.
A product of Sainik School, Rewa, Lt General Dwivedi was commissioned into the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in December 1984. Throughout his illustrious military journey, he has commanded various units, including serving as Sector Commander and Inspector General (IG) of Assam Rifles in the North East sector.
His tenure as Northern Army Commander, from 2022 to 2024, saw him providing strategic guidance and operational oversight for critical operations along the northern and western borders. He played a pivotal role in orchestrating dynamic counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, showcasing his tactical acumen and leadership prowess.
Beyond his operational roles, Lt Gen Dwivedi has held key positions at Army Headquarters, served as Vice Chief of Army Staff, and led the 9th Corps in Himachal Pradesh. His diverse command appointments and operational experience have prepared him to assume the responsibilities of the 30th Army Chief with utmost proficiency.
During his tenure, Lt Gen Dwivedi actively engaged in negotiations with China to address the longstanding border issue while focusing on modernization and equipping of the Indian Army. He championed the induction of indigenous equipment as part of India’s vision for self-reliance, aligning with the principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
