Union Cabinet approved Wednesday the J&K Reservation (2nd Amendment) Bill, 2019 and with this 10 percent reservation is guaranteed in government offices and educational institutes for poor.
The new quota for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) is in addition to the already existing reservations in the state.
According to the bill those families are considered as EWS who annual income is not more than Rs 8 lakh.
The centre came up with a constitutional amendment bill earlier this year in January to extend quota benefits to the EWS people. Apex court had upheld it to give 10 percent reservation in public employment and educational institutes.
The move of government comes amid speculations over Article 35A abrogation following additonal 10,000 troops deployed in the Valley.
Former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti questioned Delhi over the move while Bharatiya Janata Party accused her party was trying to create panic among the people.
J&K will go into Assembly polls later this year and currently the core leaders of BJP are in New Delhi for a meet with national party leadership.
According to BJP J&K president Ravinder Raina, the meeting with national leadership is focused towards preparation of the Assembly elections in the state.
Since December 2018 the state is under President’s rule.
