No designer or brands have given a heed to this problem mostly even when a petition was raised and signed by thousands of women.

Jayalakshmi from Kerala has made a business out of designing clothes with the aim of giving your hands some leisure.

Jayalakshmi lives in Thrissur. She seems to be doing her part to change the current status quo under the name of Pockets 13.
Although the history of pockets dates back to the 17th century, it was rare for women’s clothing to have pockets until the 20th century.
Jayalakshmi is an agriculture engineer and communication specialist, she resigned from her job due to some unforeseen circumstances. Jayalakshmi started this pocket dress business on Instagram as a platform to use her free time to shape her thinking.
She explains how she always saw large pockets in men trousers and when it came to women there were tiny coin pockets in the front and large pockets in the back which would without nothing. As things in the back pocket would slip and fall eventually.
‘When I was six months old, I used to ask my mom to put pockets on the dress. Our mother thought it was annoying. I later got acquainted with tailors but I mostly sewed dresses with pockets of my choice. ‘
When Jayalakshmi moved away to big city to study and to find job her co-workers and friends took notice of her dress and even asked her to make something for them with pockets.
And during the covid-19 period. Jayalakshmi finally started to do business on her creativity she started as a small shop in Instagram and in no time, she made 70,000. Because the demand for pocket dresses was high and she encashed it at the right time. Today, if you want to go out with your phone, card or wallet, you don’t have to carry a bag or purse in your hand you can hands free says Jayalakshmi.
