UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has said that Israel is believed to have committed war crimes in the recent airstrikes between Israel and the Hamas military in Gaza.
On Thursday, Michelle said an impartial inquiry should be held to determine the truth of the matter, only then would the truth come out, not pointing the finger at Israel or Gaza.
She also said that peace would only last for a short time if the Israeli-Palestinian issue was not resolved.
The UN Human Rights Council discussed the situation in Gaza through a special session. In this context came the mention of war crimes. She clarified that Hamas, which had launched thousands of rockets, had also committed war crimes.
This is the worst situation since 2014, the High Commissioner for Human Rights told the Council. The 11-day war left 248 dead in Gaza and 12 in Israel. The city of Gaza has been destroyed, mired in abject poverty.
Attacks on civilians targeting military posts are considered war crimes. Several Muslim countries have adopted a resolution at the United Nations on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
If approved, a permanent commission will be set up to investigate human rights abuses in the area. The ambassadors of Israel and Palestine made the remarks at the meeting.
The United States has also said it will support Gaza, which has suffered heavy losses due to the war with Israel.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that he will rally international support for Gaza’s development.
However, he stated that their numbers were not enough to help the people of Gaza.
Blinken spoke to the media after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Some issues and challenges need to be addressed before violence can erupt again in the region. First, the reconstruction of Gaza must begin and humanitarian assistance must be provided. America is ahead in this regard. Also gathers international support. We want to make sure that Hamas does not benefit from the restructuring.”
Blinken also added that it was not the right time to resume talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
In a statement, Netanyahu stated, “It is shameful” “Today’s disgraceful judgment is yet another example of the UN Human Rights Council’s flagrant anti-Israel obsession.”
“This heinous act defies international law and inspires terrorists all around the world,” Netanyahu stated.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem declared the Islamist Palestinian group that ruling Gaza “welcomes the Human Rights Council’s decision to establish an international inquiry commission into Israeli crimes in the Palestinian territories.”
