The story of the Iranian navy’s largest warship, ‘Kharg’ is over. The ship, which was on duty in the Gulf of Oman, caught fire at around 2.25 am on Wednesday. Firefighters worked hard to contain the blaze but to no avail. Eventually, Kharg sank.
The British-built Kharg fleet was over 200 meters (about 650 feet) long, often referred to as helicopter lifter, which was actually a replenishment vessel. And also was used for training purposes.
Local media reported that there were 400 crew members on board at the time of the fire; all of them have been rescued, with more than 20 reported injured.
The Khark submerged at the Jask port near the Strait of Hormuz, 1,270 kilometers southeast of the Iranian capital Tehran.
Last year, a missile accidentally collided with a warship at the port of Jask while training the Iranian army. Nineteen sailors were killed in the incident. Fifteen people were injured. Earlier in 2018, the Iranian warship Capsian also sank at sea.
A big fire erupted in a different trial at an oil plant in Southern Tehran early Wednesday evening. Officials stated it was an accident and blamed an explosion in a liquefied gas pipe.
A few hours after the fire broke out, AFP correspondents said that intensive flames and feathers of black smokes which were seen from far away across the capital were eventually brought under control.
