Indian government is seeking to roll out the program of registering its citizens across the country and for this a time frame of September 2020 has been fixed for the preparation of National Population Register (NPR), which is believed to be a usual residents’ list.
After the completion and publication of the NPR list it is expected the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRC) could be launched, a pan-India version of Assam’s NRC.
In preparing the NPR a usual resident is asked whether he or she is residing in the same local area for the past six months or more and intent to reside in the area for at least next six months.
It is a register of usual residents of India and the list is prepared at the local village/sub-town, sub-district, district, state and national level. It is prepared under the provisions of Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Regulation of Citizens and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.
For all the residents of India it is mandatory to register in the list.
The primary objective of the list is to come up with a comprehensive identity database of usual resident of India.
The NPR list contains database including demographic and biometric particulars.
