Today we will be talking about a very common question and it is how to clean marble floors? the answer to this question is a process that we are going to explain today. Marble floors are one of the most famous floors around the world specifically in eastern countries where people prefer marble over any other texture for their houses. Honestly, we cannot even blame them for it because they are very elegant and classy and they add a sense of royalty towards a normal regular house.
Talking about the routine if you spill on your marble floors regularly there is nothing better than that to clean them from a mop, but we will recommend you that you stay careful about the tools you are using. Talking about the tools, we highly recommend you to use a dry mop or invest in a dust mop for this work. Now without wasting much time let’s get into the process of how to wash marble floors.
How to clean marble floors
The process of cleaning marble floors is somewhat different if compared to cleaning other types of floors because they do not require the usage of hard chemicals or scrubbers. The list of things you will need are
- Soft towel or cloth.
- Clean water.
- Soft mop.
- pH-neutral soap.
- Hot water.
Step 1: Getting the water ready
As mentioned above, you cannot use hard scrubs or harsh chemicals in the case of marble floors. So, the best option you are left with is hot water. It is very effective in cutting through grease, dirt, and other such things that are known for sticking to the surface.
Using normal temperature water would not be as effective as mildly boiled water. We also recommend that you use distilled water because it is highly likely that distilled water will not discolor, stain, or damage your floors made of marble.
Step 2: Use the cleaner
These types of floors are porous so they naturally require mild detergent. For this purpose, you can have a pH neutral cleaner which is both safe and mild to use in our case.
Although we recommend you follow the manufacturer’s instructions the basic thing here is to add some quantity of this detergent into your hot water and putting it in a spray bottle. This is perfect for cleaning the marble floors.
Step 3: Mopping the marble floors
For this process, you can use a regular manual mop or spin mop, depends upon what you have, but we must say that spin mops are highly practical in this case because they are very efficient in rinsing the water out quickly.
Start from the most faraway corner of the room and gradually cover the entire floor of the room. You can even overlap to make sure it gets cleaner.
Step 4: Rinsing
Once the entire marble floor is properly mopped using the hot water and detergent solution, it is the right time to rinse, you can use a bucket full of cold water and clean it up. We recommend that you should spend a little bit extra time while mopping the floor so that any part of the cleaning solution is not left on the floor. This also is a great way to get rid of any remaining dirt or dust.
Step 5: Dry the floor
This is not much of a step because it will automatically dry the floor, you don’t have to do anything about it but you have to make sure that you do not step on the floor once it is drying, because it can leave spots. You can even use a soft cloth or a clean towel to wipe the floor so that the process is faster.
How to avoid any damage
As mentioned, multiple times in the article, marble floors are very precious and it is also very easy to damage them but there are a few ways that you can follow to avoid any substantial damage to your lovely floors.
Clean as you go
In our houses, it is very normal that spills will happen all the time and if you have a baby or a pet living with you, the possibility gradually increases. The best thing you can do at this moment is to clean the spills as early as possible so that the marble does not discolor or stain.
No to air drying
We never recommend you just clean the floor and let it dry using air because when air drying your floors it can be fatal for the floors. The detergent used for cleaning may be getting observed by the floor marble which can hurt the flooring. You can use a towel or clean cloth for drying the floor while the process of mopping.
Mild detergents are the way to go
Marble floors are very porous so, be sure to use only mild detergent for cleaning. If you use hard items, it is a high possibility that the floor will discolor or leave a stain. As we have used in the process, the pH level must be kept appropriate and the level of 2 or 3 is most likely to damage the surface because they are very acidic.
It is best to use a pH neutral product because they are very gentle to the surface and most suitable for marble floors. One might also argue that they are not as efficient as other detergents but you are to keep in mind the type of floors we are dealing with and using detergent with alkaline and acidic products can be dangerous for them.
Scuff marks can be removed using felt
Scuff marks are those marks that get drawn on the surface when the furniture’s dragged over them. It can destroy the visual of the flooring and most of the scuff marks get off by normal mopping, but some of them are very stubborn. In this case, you can use a felt pad or tennis ball lightly in order to get rid of them.
