In a shocking incident, an air hostess was arrested for allegedly smuggling nearly 1 kilogram of gold by concealing it in her rectum. The arrest took place at Kannur International Airport, Kerala, and highlights the lengths to which smugglers will go to evade detection.
Details of the Arrest
On May 28, officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Kannur, acting on a tip from their Cochin counterparts, intercepted Surabhi Khatun, a cabin crew member arriving from Muscat. Upon a personal search, they discovered 960 grams of gold in compound form hidden in her rectum.
Legal Proceedings
Following her arrest, Surabhi, who hails from Kolkata, was interrogated and subsequently produced before the jurisdictional magistrate. She has been remanded to 14 days in judicial custody at a women’s prison in Kannur. The airline she worked for has yet to comment on the incident.
Ongoing Investigation
A detailed investigation is currently underway. Initial evidence suggests this was not Surabhi’s first attempt at smuggling gold. Authorities are also looking into the possible involvement of Kerala-based individuals in the smuggling operation.
This incident underscores the need for stringent security measures at airports to combat smuggling activities and protect the integrity of international travel.
