Haiti President Jovenel Moise assassinated at his home; wife hospitalized: Says Interim PM

The Caribbean country of Haiti has been shaken by the bright light assassination of President Jovenel Moise, who was brutally assassinated at his home.

 The interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, has said that some unidentified assailants broke into the house and attacked the president and his wife with guns.

 The president was killed in the attack, and his wife, the country’s first lady Martin Moise has been hospitalized with severe injuries, a statement said. Joseph condemned the attack. It was described as a vicious, inhumane act.

Moise was assassinated in the wake of the country’s lack of political and economic stability and the escalation of gang wars.

The country was rocked by the assassination of the president. Serious concerns that the country’s intelligence department has warned that there is the possibility of the outbreak.

The police were alerted. However, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the situation was under control. He said a comprehensive investigation into the murder was underway.

Early on Wednesday, there were generally empty streets of the national capital, Port-au-Prince, but a few citizens looted stores in one area. Reuters stated gunshots were heard.

Apart from the political crises, ransom kidnappings have risen in recent months, demonstrating the increasing impact of the armed gangs in the Caribbean country.

The recession, food shortages, and soaring inflation in the country where 60% of the population earns less than $2 or around 150 rz a day might exacerbate the situation Gang violence has also grown in recent months in the city, as armed factions fight one other with police and for street control.

Haiti is also confronted by chronic poverty and natural calamities.

These problems are linked to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the 2016 Hurricane Matthew. The quake killed over two lakh residents, and a hurricane killed around one thousand people.

In a sequence of seven prime ministers over the last four years, the president was met with strong opposition from the people who saw his mandate as illegal. Most recently, after only three months in a role, Joseph was due to be replaced this week. He was also accused of postponing his election dates. While everybody said Moise’s last day was February 7, 2021, but Moise argued it was 2022, which raised various disputes.

The state continued to fall into turmoil in 2020 without a parliament, leading to Moise’s ruling by decree, fueling increasing suspicion.
