Gujarat announced the 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) to go into effect from Monday, January 14, on Makar Sankranti Day.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the new law was introduced by centre earlier this week and Gujarat becomes the first Indian stage to implement it quota in government jobs and higher education for general category.
A government circular is yet awaited and amid the rollout the state civil service exams slated for January 20 has been postponed.
Rupani added the reservation will be implemented in all such recruitments of which the first stage of exam is not yet held even though the related advertisements have been published.
He tweeted, “Happy to state that the Government of Gujarat has decided to implement 10% EWS reservation benefits from 14th January, 2019.”
The landmark 10 percent reservation bill was cleared by President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday to provide support for people who outside high income brackets, whose annual income is less than Rs 8 lakh and posses not more than 5-acre of land.
Government introduced the bill amid criticism by opposition which cited high unemployment rate in the country and saying the move was a pre-election gimmick.
A similar ordinance by Gujarat government was rejected in 2016 by High Court in the state.
The ordinance then was to allow 10 percent reservation to people belonging to unreserved category with annual family income less than Rs 6 lakh.
