The video of the fire spiraling in the middle of the sea, in the Gulf of Mexico is scary as beautiful as it is. Currently, the video is going viral on social media.
The fire was sparked by an underwater pipeline leak in the ocean. The incident took place on the sea surface west of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The state oil company Pemex said the blaze broke out early Friday morning. PEMEX said the accident was caused by a gas leak from an underwater pipeline. The fire looked like lava emerged from underwater giving it a form of fire eye.
This pipeline connects Pemex’s most important ‘Ku maloob zaap’ oil development to the Pemex platform. A Pemex official said: “The accident happened at around 5.15 AM and the fire was suppressed by 10:30 AM almost after five hours of fighting in the sea.”
The company’s spokesperson said “No one was injured in the incident. We worked hard for about five hours to put out the fire. We are investigating the cause of the accident,” he said.
Pemex said they used water to defuse the fire with the help of boats but the employees reported that the company used nitrogen to suppress the fire.
Pemex also said that it shut the 12-inch-diameter pipeline valves. This is not the first time that Pemex had created such a catastrophe the company has a long record of serious industrial catastrophes in its plants.
Angel Carrizales, Head of ASEA Oil Safety Regulator in Mexico, said that the “didn’t generate any spill” incident was posted on Twitter. The scorching on the sea surface he did not understand. The company is currently investigating what caused such a big catastrophe.
According to a Pemex incident report given by one of Reuters’ sources: ‘The turbomachinery at the Ku Maloob Zaap producing facilities was impacted by the electric storm and severe rain.’
Ku Maloob Zaap is PEMEX’s largest crude oil producer with more than 40 percent of its over 1.7 million barrels of daily output.
