Fate Of Triple Talaq Bill Uncertain 1

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 faced huge uproar in the Rajya Sabha today when it was placed for discussion. Its fate is now uncertain as just one more day is left in the Winter Session and the house was adjourned until 11 a.m. on Friday.

Opposition said the so-called triple talaq Bill would not empower the Muslim women, but in fact finish off them.

Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad said the intent and soul of it are laudable and cannot be opposed, but the clause in it will finish off Muslim women.

Azad added if the husbands are sent to jail, who will upbring the children and who will provide all the required things to the family.

The Opposition party MP continued saying that the government must provide for such women and their children when the husbands are in jail.

The demand of Opposition to refer the bill to a Select Committee of the Upper House for detailed consideration was rejected by the government.

Expressing displeasure the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the Select Committee suggested by the Opposition is not acceptable.

He said, “The rule clearly states that any Standing or Select Committee should be formed so as to reflect the nature of this House. That is not the case here.”

Meanwhile, All India Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said members from all parties have been included who seeks sending the bill to the Standing Committee.

It is to note the BJP members were not included as the party didn’t look to send the bill to the Standing Committee.
