Tanzania need to launch intiatives and campaigns to recycle ewaste before it is too late, suggests a recent study conducted by Van de Brink and Szrimai.
Imports of electronic products in the country are on rise due to widespread demand of those in offices and homes. Poor ewaste management is paving the way for such scraps to become a ticking bomb.
As of now the recycling industry is mainly focused in plastic and scrap metal. Hence a strong step is required from the government in association with its National Environment Manaement Council and other stakeholders to curb the alarming problem.
Concern is also being shown about how to properly recycle the hard drives as just cleaning does not guarantee privacy breach. There are data recovery software whcih can easily recover deleted files from the recycled or refurbished computer hard drives.
However, proper recycling need to take help of soem specialized software that helps in complete deletion of the data from hard drives and other electronic products.
The John Magufuli government need to amend and enforce Environment Law to accommodate the Basel Convection on the control of trans-boundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal which was ratified on 7 April, 1993 and Tanzania is one of the signatories of it.
