England grabbed the Cricket World Cup title Sunday defeating New Zealand for the first time in extraordinary circumstances. The match was tied and the first Super Over too ended at a similar note.
In fifty overs both the teams scored 241 runs and Super Over play was announced. Stokes and Buttler came to bat from England’s side and scored 15 of six balls delivered by Trent Boult. The score included two fours.
Similarly, 15 runs too were scored by Jimmy Neesham and Guptill of New Zealand from the deliveries of Jofra Archer.
However, by courtesy of a superior boundary count England, the country that invented cricket, was declared as winner of the World Cup. The boundaries were 26 to 17.
Buttler said, “The most ridiculous game of cricket to have ever been played.”
Meanwhile, New Zealand has lost two straight finals. England had earlier lost three finals and one was at Lord’s too.
Stokes said, “I’m pretty lost for words. All the hard work over four years to get here, and to be champions of the World is an amazing feeling… Playing against New Zealand is always a great event to be a part of. They’re a seriously good team.”
With England’s win the atmosphere at Lord’s was electric. Throughout the match the fans were seen singing and dancing.
England had to wait 44 long years to get hands on the World Cup trophy. Thrice the team lost in final and after 1992 failed to enter the semifinals.
In 1992 Pakistan defeated England in the final.
