Former US President Donald Trump has been ousted for a second time. Trump, who faces charges of instigating an attack on the Capitol building on Jan. 6, came out on Saturday by a 57–43 vote in the Senate.
The U.S. Congress convened on January 6 to confirm the victory of Democrat candidate Joe Biden in the November US presidential election. It is learned that Trump supporters attacked the Capitol building on this occasion. Trump is accused of instigating the attack on his supporters.
With this, the Democrats introduced an impeachment motion against Trump in the American Congress.
The resolution was passed in the House of Representatives and came up for hearing in the Senate on Saturday.
Democrats however have failed to hold Trump accountable for the incident in which the siege of the Capitol building, which left an indelible mark on American history and claimed five lives, turned violent.
Donald Trump is the first person to face impeachment, even after stepping down, and the only president to have been impeached twice in the history of America.
Opposition Democrats filed an impeachment motion in December last year accusing Trump of abuse of power, but the majority voted in favor of Trump. Donald Trump came out of the impeachment.
Trump has also wrapped up his notoriety as a leader who has been impeached for the twice by the House of Representatives.
Former Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton have been impeached in the past.
Democrats in the Senate are expected to pass a resolution barring Donald Trump from running in future elections if he is impeached. If convicted, he would have been barred from running for president again in 2024. But the Republican Party did not cooperate with them.
It has argued that it would not be appropriate to impeach Trump once he steps down from the presidency.
Trump would have been impeached if he got a two-thirds majority of 67 votes in the 100-member Senate. This time around, the two parties have a combined 50 seats in the Senate. Seven other Republican members supported the impeachment.
The senators were confused when they first round of votes 55 to 45 was in favor of calling for direct witnesses to the Capitol building attack.
After several debates it was decided to abandon the witness trial and proceed with the voting process.
It seems that the two sides quickly put an end to this, as the Senate was unable to move forward on key issues without resolving the issue. The resolution was eventually defeated by a margin of 10 votes to 53, with 43 against, all charges against Trump were dropped.
The trial in the Senate ended in just five days. The Republican Party was largely unwilling to prosecute.
The impeachment motion against Donald Trump was defeated.
It is however noteworthy that seven members of his party (Republicans) voted against Trump.
Despite condemning the attack on the Capitol building, the party ended the trial without much scope for arguments that it did not want a trial on Trump after stepping down.
Donald Trump released a statement shortly after his impeachment in the Senate as the political movement began.
He said no other president in the country had been blamed. It is said that he was chased by a witch. He thanked his lawyers for standing up for the truth and upholding justice. Donald Trump said Democrats wanted to bury him politically, but could not, and that his political movement had just begun.
He made it clear that his foremost duty was to keep America’s Great Again.
Democrats have fired at Republicans who voted against an impeachment motion against Trump for defying the Constitution.
They stated that the Senate is now infamous for defending a man who hurt American democracy.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi commented that not being able to keep Trump a traitor was an escape from the democratic system.
Biden released a statement shortly after Trump was acquitted. “There has never been such a tragic situation in American history. Violence and terrorism have no place in our country. All American citizens, especially leaders, must stand up for the truth and defeat the lie. That fact must be taken into account”.
