The history of electric vehicles first began in 1830. An electric motor was used for propulsion rather than a gasoline-powered motor in an electric vehicle. In addition to electric cars, bikes, motorcycles, boats, planes, and trains can all be powered by electricity.
In1828 the Hungarian Anyos Jedlik invented the small model car powered by an electric motor. Around 1832 Robert Anderson develops the first crude electric vehicle.
In 1835 another small electric car was designed by Professor Stratingh and his assistant Christopher Becker in Groningen, Holland. Thomas Davenport, a blacksmith from Brandon, Vermont, built a small electric car in 1835.
In 1842, Thomas Davenport and Scotsman Robert Davidson successfully built an electric vehicle together. But, it would have been a little harder to charge.
The Frenchman Gaston Plante invented a good battery in 1865. Problems with it led his fellow countrymen, Camille, to further improve the electric storage battery in 1881.
Electric vehicles especially need a battery to run. An electric racing car built in Belgium in 1899 set a world record with a top speed of 68 mph. It was designed by Camille Jenatzy.
Ford later built a cheap gas car. Ford Motor Company introduced the Model T name. Although it was very useful at the time, it did not do as well as expected. General Motors introduces the electric vehicle under the Cadillac Touring Edition.
In the following decades, with the rise of gasoline and diesel cars, electric cars disappeared for a short time. Electric cars’ limited driving range, longer charging time, and heavier batteries make them unsustainable.
Major automakers did not stop making electric cars. General Motors experimented with running on batteries. American Motors Corporation has unveiled a prototype electric car called the Amitron. The company said it plans to sell Amitron in just a few years. But that did not happen as they planned it to.
the Sebring-Vanguard, Florida, company has introduced citicar. It became one of the most popular electric cars in a few years. Eventually, more than 4,400 cars were sold.
Citicar’s top speed is 38 miles per hour. But, after some time the citicar EV also disappeared.
The cobalt-oxide cathode, the heart of a lithium-ion battery, was discovered by John B Goodenough and his colleagues at the University of Oxford. Mentioned that in the coming decades, possible batteries will come through this innovation. In 2019, Good Announce and two other researchers were awarded the Nobel Prize for developing lithium-ion batteries.
Founded in 2003 Tesla Motors Company has become one of the most popular electronic vehicle manufacturers in the world and the anticipation for the EV maker to expand around the world is increasing every year including India.
Tesla was meant to be launched this year in India but due to the government’s heavy tax, the company delayed its entry.
Tesla has currently a new model to launch on way, Roadster is expected to hit the road sooner. This is a two-seater sports car. It costs more than $ 80,000. It can go more than 200 miles on a single charge. It used lithium-ion batteries.
Considering the growing demand for electric vehicles many companies have turned to electric cars. Currently, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Tesla, and MG Motors are bringing electric cars to our country.
