Eight African cities met in Nigeria to pledge reducing carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and meet the target of Paris Agreement to limit climate change.
Meeting target needs significant work to be done in the continent. The sectors which are to be in the top list include transport, waste management, energy production and building.
The cities that pledged include Accra, Dar es Salaam, Pretoria, Addis Ababa, Lagos, Dakar, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
It is expected Abidjan and Nairobi too may sign the pledge soon and become a part of the mission to reduce emissions to zero by 2050.
Accra mayor Adjei Sowah said more African cities are lately being aware of the impact of worsening climate extremes and possibly would cut emissions.
A new data of World Bank reveals by 2050 about 70 percent of the world’s population could live in cities and population of Africa may grow substantially in coming decades. It is further learned the continent to account for half of world’s population growth by 2050.
One such example of population problem is Lagos. The city is facing infamous traffic jams with 21 million population which is producing large volumes of waste too.
