When he was the CEO of Deccan Aviation, new energy flowed into him as he undertook tasks such as boarding civilians and providing tier-to-city air connectivity. That joy is indescribable in words. I miss it now.
Don’t make that mistake
I do not believe in reincarnation, but if I were to be born again I would not sell my Deccan Aviation to Vijay Mallya this time under any circumstances. The decision to sell Deccan Aviation was a mistake. I had to listen to my mind. But instead of doing so, I leaned towards the opinion of investors in Deccan Aviation. It is true that we have made a profit by selling Deccan Aviation. But my dream is to make air travel closer to the common man. But that did not happen. I don’t care much about what’s going to happen though.
Gopinath in politics
After selling Air Deccan to Kingfisher owner Vijay Mallya, I contested as an Independent candidate from the Bangalore South constituency with the aim of doing public service and lost. Nevertheless, despite my journey, I took an active part in the Anna Hazare movement against corruption. I joined the Opposition party as soon as I left. However, I did not like the regulatory tendencies of the party leader Arvind Kejriwal and left the party. But Arvind Kejriwal is still admired and respected in terms of the way the party is set up, the way it has won elections, and the policies it is governing. I believe that Arvind Kejriwal has boldly started a new chapter in politics.
We need such leaders
Big corporate companies all have close ties with those who are also crucial in policymaking. What we need is not good leaders for the corporate powers that be. Entrepreneurs with creative ideas who bring about socially revolutionary change need promoters. Only then will our society change rapidly. The fruits of development reach everyone.
Hopes on themselves
Among the current entrepreneurs, Ola Bhavish Agarwal and Paytm Vijay Shekhar Sharma impressed me the most. We need thousands of people like this. The weekend should penetrate into different areas. We have to put our ideas into practice and change the course of the country. In my view these days Freedom Fighters means Entrepreneur. They can build the future of this country.
That is not happening
I hope that changes will take place in red tape as soon as Narendra Modi takes over as Prime Minister. But that is not what is happening. It took seven years to repeal the retro tax. Unnecessary obstacles encountered at the field level for new entrepreneurs should be eliminated. The flexibility to implement the idea as soon as possible should be in terms of government. Only then can we move beyond China into development.
When he retires
There is no such thing as retirement. I’m still busy after I left Deccan Aviation. In our village in Karnataka, I spend a lot of time in agriculture. In addition, I am the Honorary President of Deccan Charters. The company owns up to fifty helicopters and jets. I am involved in various activities related to the management of these. I will be a part of hour-long discussions on politics, the Indian economy, and corruption. I also write books on current affairs.
