BREAKING: Shooting at Florida bank; 5 killed
A gunman opened fire Wednesday in a SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida, killing five people.
Identified as Zephan Xaver the suspect is learned to have contacted authorities on 911 and informed he has fired shots inside the Florida bank.
Police officers reached the scene at 12:30 p.m. and found the 21-year-old suspect barricaded himself inside.
Initial negotiations to make the suspect surrender were unsuccessful and so SWAT team was called to convince. Eventually Xaver surrendered.
Xaver was an employee of Avon Park Correctional Institution and was designated as correctional officer. He resigned on January 9 after just about two months of his hiring.
Sebring is about 90 miles south of Orlando and after the surrender police said situation was confined to the bank.
SunTrust CEO Bill Rogers said he is deeply saddened and the company is working with officials.
He said, “We are working with officials and dedicating ourselves to fully addressing the needs of all the individuals and families involved.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis urged people in a tweet to keep the victims and the families in their prayers.
