BREAKING: Massive Earthquake Rocksm Indonesia’s Lombok

A massive earthquake of 7-magnitude rocked Indonesia’s tourist island Lombok Sunday evening killing more than eighty people and shaking neighboring Bali. This was the second quake in one week on the island. The death toll of previous quake was at least one dozen.

Authorities said buildings in Bali’s Denpasar area was damaged too in the latest quake. Ceiling panels of the airport terminal were shaken loose.

Video footage from Bali showed people running on the street in panic. Soldiers and rescue people were seen carrying injured people on stretchers in Lombok.

According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho at least 82 people have been killed, many others injured and thousands of homes have been damaged.

Nugroho added most of the deaths occured due to collapsing of houses in the quake and 65 people died in North Lombok district.

USGS report reveals the quake was centered at a depth of 10.5 kilometers in northern Lombok.

A Lombok resident said, “I was watching TV when I felt a big shake… The lamp was shaking, and people were shouting ‘Get out.’ I ran out into the dark because the power cut off.”

People started moving to higher ground fearing tsunami even though the waves lifted just 15 centimeters.

Airports of both Lombok and Bali however continued the operation as usual Sunday night.
