A massive earthquake of 7.4-magnitude struck New Zealand Sunday morning near the Kermadec islands. Initial message from the country’s Civil Defence organization described strong and hazardous currents with unpredictable surges expected near the short.

Little later the threat was lifted saying no tsunami is expected as an aftermath of the quake that struck at 10.55 am local time and about 928 km north-northeast of Tauranga in North Island. It was 34 km deep.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre too initially announced threat of tsunami waves for parts of the South Pacific. In later update it withdrew the advice.
