Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan now has to do more than India. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced to be awarding him for this great and successful project during his visit to United States later in September.
According to Minister of state in the PMO Jitendra Singh, the initiatives of Modi for India were bringing laurels from other countries.
Jitendra Singh’s tweet read, “Another award, another moment of pride for every Indian, as PM Modi’s diligent and innovative initiatives bring laurels from across the world. Sh Narendra Modi to receive award from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan during his visit to the United States.”
Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014, immediately after assuming office with a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections, and it is being implemented with components like solid waste management, public and toilets, and household toilets construction.
Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission has two thrusts – for rural and for urban. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (rural) operates under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation while the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (urban) operates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Last year the prime minister was honored with Champions of the Earth Award from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The award is UN’s highest environmental honor.
Receiving the honor Modi said, “It is an honour for Indians. Indians are committed to saving the environment. Climate and calamity are directly related to culture; if the climate is not the focus of culture, calamity cannot be prevented. When I say ‘Sabka Saath,’ I also include nature in it.”
