Nairobi: the former US President Barack Obama’s family is mourning the death of his beloved step-grandmother, Sarah Obama.
She passed away on Monday in a hospital in Kisumu, Kenya at the age of 99 after a long battle with her illness which is undisclosed, and was receiving a series of treatments, in a Kisumu hospital.
Although, Sheik Musa Ismail, the family spokesperson confirmed that she did not die from covid-19.
Barack Obama took to Twitter to express his deepest condolences on the death of his beloved grandmother.
“It’s true. She has gone to be with God. She passed away this morning, “confirmed her daughter Marsat Onyango.
Sarah Obama was born in Lake Victoria,in 1922. Sarah Obama is the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama Barack Obama’s grandfather.
She had aided orphans for all her life.
In 2009 she founded the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation to create funds for girls’ education, particularly for those who are unable to afford it. The funds were also used for the construction of an educational campus.
Obama treated her very affectionately, even though he had no blood relationship.
He visited Kenya in 2006 and went home to Sarah and introduced her to everyone as his grandmother.
After that, she has widely known all over the world as “Mama Sarah.”
She used to be a cook in Kenya for British missionaries and did not own television when her step-grandson was chosen as the president of the United States.
Barack Obama was welcomed by Mama Sarah when he became the first President of the United States to visit Kenya in 2015 and in 2018 he after her left office.
We’ve lost a strong, virtuous woman,” said Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, “a matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values.”
Mama Sarah’s funeral will be held on Tuesday according to Islamic tradition said, Ismail
