ROME —Every Single day more people are arriving at hospitals in the northern region of Lombardy — all of them are affected by Coronavirus. Some of them are already facing difficulty breathing.
Resources and space are getting scarce, and patients are being transferred to faraway facilities.
Health Experts and Doctors are saying that it is just a matter of a few days and all the hospital beds will be filled.
“It’s as if you were asking what to do if an atomic bomb explodes,” said Pesenti, Lombardy’s intensive care unit head. “You declare defeat. We’ll try to salvage what is salvageable.”
The eruption of uncontained coronavirus cases has pushed the country’s wealthiest region. Italy is giving a warning to the world to not wait too long for starting outbreak control.
Lombardy’s health-care system is no less than one in any of Western Europe. For three weeks the hospital is maintaining the health facilities by converting regular space in hospitals into Covid-19 units. HIV treatments and surgeries are delayed for now.
But the hospitals couldn’t keep up with the condition for longer. Currently, there are 4200 patients affected by the virus in the region waiting to avail of hospital facilities. Presenti said that in the coming 2 weeks the number of patients will grow to nearly 20,000 and out of them, 3000-4000 people will be in need of intensive care.
Lombardy has only 737 intensive care beds for the virus affected patients of them more than 600 beds are occupied.
China has pledged to supply 20,000 protective suits and around 10,000 ventilators to Italy. Italy is trying all possible efforts to bring 20,000 healthcare workers by calling retired people and recruiting new but this is a lengthy process.
