Apex court asks Shaheen Bagh protesters to find alternate site

Indian apex court told Monday to Shaheen Bagh protesters to protest constitutionally without blocking roads of Delhi.

Supreme Court has chosen two senior lawyers to talk to the Shaheen Bagh protesters and persuade them to continue their agitation against Citizenship (Amendment) Act in another location.

SC said, “Right to protest is a fundamental right. What is the alternative area they can continue the protests without blocking the road?”

Justice Joseph responded to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s submissions that the protestors are using women and children as a shield.

The court said it is not curtailing the right to protest, but is concerned that others may too emulate the protesters and block another road of Delhi.

The court asked Mehta to suggest alternative sites for the Shaheen Bagh protestors but he said the protestors to find the spots.

Mehta appeared in the court for the Delhi Police.

The next hearing is on February 24.

Protestors in hundreds and thousands have set up camp on a road in Shaheen Bagh for more than two months. As an aftermath daily commuters are facing problems and running longer amid frequent traffic jams to reach their destinations. Businesses meanwhile have also complained running into losses due to the road blockades.

The court said, “If everyone starts blocking roads, where will people go.”

Meanwhile, the protesters demanded Sunday for a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
