Home minister Amit Shah said the government will not take back Citizen Amendment Act (CAA). He was addressing to a rally in Lucknow, capital city of Uttar Pradesh, today.
Amid anti-CAA protests across India Shah called leaders of the opposition parties for a public debate on the issue.
The opposition parties that opposed the CAA includes Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party. Such mass protests forced Bharatiya Janata Party to launch an awareness campaign on CAA. The campaign is called Jan Jagran Abhiyan and aims to make people aware against those who are trying to divide the country because this is again dividing the people.
Amit Shah said actions of Congress party divided the country into two. He mostly targeted Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
Similarly, the minister blamed leaders of the oppositions for spreading illusions about CAA. He also urged the people to be loud to oppositions that CAA won’t be rolled back.
CAA gives citizenship to non-Muslims from Afghanistan, Bangladesh as the three are Muslim-majority countries.
For five days women are protesting at Clock Tower in Lucknow and police have arrested sixteen of them.
Protesters showed anti-CAA placards and raised slogans against National Register of Citizens (NRC) to oppose the rally, but police cleared Clock Tower before Amit Shah arrived and addressed the rally.
