A 36-year-old Fiji mum, Kasmeer Lata, was sent to jail on Tuesday for six years and 11 months after found guilty selling her teenage daughter about 1000 times as sex slave over a period of two years.
The horiffi case is one of the most sickening in the legal history of New Zealand. This is just the third case since 1961 when such crime was included in the Crimes Act.
The teenager’s statement read out in the court reveals she is suffering from regular pain and has mental health issues too.
Ms Lata added, “I see men differently now. I think they always want something from me and that is why they are talking to me.”
The family moved from Fiji to New Zealand about a year before the daughter was pushed into prostitution on her 15th birthday.
Their visitors visas expired and soon the family had no money for food, rent and paying bills. The teen was told to begin working as prostitute to help in getting money for food and other necessities.
The mother put an ad on a website about sexual service, hiding the true age of the daughter. Later the family started getting men through a escort service too. Men use to call her for an appointment at motels and the charges were as much as $200 per hour. She was sometimes sold five times a day.
