Vitamin D is crucial for bone growth and muscle strength. It helps in boosting the immune system. For this reason, doctors recommend taking supplements that are high in vitamin D. But this vitamin deficiency is severe in most of the growing children i.e. children between the ages of ten and nineteen in the country.
Vitamin D deficiency at a critical age for mental and physical development can have a number of side effects in children. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with UNICEF, has been monitoring the vitamin D status of children under the age of 19 in the country. The report was recently submitted to Parliament with the findings of the study.
Nationally, 23.9 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 19, or about one in four, suffer from vitamin D deficiency. 13.8% of children under the age of four are diagnosed with this vitamin deficiency, while 18.2% of children between the ages of 5 and 9 are also deficient in D. It is a matter of concern that dementia increases with age.
Vitamin D avital source for the body, comes naturally from sunlight. The role of vitamin ‘D’ is crucial in providing the calcium in the foods we eat to the muscles and bones. Doctors say that if you are in the sun for at least fifteen minutes a day, you will have a vitamin ‘D’ balance. Lack of it can lead to rickets in children. Bone loss is faster in adults.
This can lead to joint pain. This is accompanied by insomnia, lethargy, depression and nausea. Prolonged exposure to these symptoms can lead to vitamin imbalances, overweight, and weakened immune systems. Changing lifestyle is also leading to vitamin imbalance.
Problems with vitamins can also be caused by not eating the right amount of food. Seafood is rich in ‘D’. Currently, ‘D’ is being added to some types of nutrition as well. Although these are readily available, they must be taken on the advice of a physician.
