Our daily routine beings with one thing and the same thing ends our day, brushing our teeth. We wake up and our first ritual would be to brush our teeth and our end-of-the-day ritual would also be brushing our teeth. For centuries we have emphasized good oral care and it has only been increasing over the year. Hundreds of kinds of toothpaste claiming to be the best in the market with multiple sellers and the toothbrush evolution is something we can all discover for hours.
We all know our ancestors used to brush their teeth with neem, charcoal, and many other free of chemical stuff with a twig from a nearby branch but we do not really know the good thing about toothbrushes.
The use of the toothbrush dates back to 3000 BC! China is the first country to use the toothbrush and this country takes the pride to have been introduced toothbrushes to our world 600 years ago.
On June 26, 1498, the first Chinese king patented a toothbrush. The world’s first toothbrush was made of pig hair, yes you might be flabbergasted right now but it is true that the toothbrushes were made of pig hair. The bristles on this toothbrush were super rigid to keep those nasty germs out of people’s mouths.

These were made of thick hair on the back of the pig’s neck. These hairs were tied to a bamboo stick in order to form a toothbrush. Until the 20th century, these brushes were imported from China by Europe and England.
These brushes were used until the discovery of William Addis, a prisoner of England in 1780. At the time, William was also making a toothbrush with pig hair. After his release from prison, he started a company called ‘Wisdom Toothbrush’ and started producing toothbrushes in England. The company currently manufactures over 70 million toothbrushes a year.
DuPont de Nemours introduced nylon bristle toothbrushes to the world in 1950. On November 7, 1857, HN Woodsworth became the first American to patent toothbrushes. Then, in 1885, large-scale production of toothbrushes began in the United States.
And so began the new era of toothbrushes.
Presently there are expensive electric toothbrushes that are considered a luxury looking at their self-cleansing, paste dispensing, and various other features.
Nevertheless, you wouldn’t have thought that pig hairs were used to make toothbrushes ever, did you?
