Google Pixel 5 is now official, and we have learned about the latest flagship devices from the maker of Android at Google’s launch night in the Livestream event. The company revealed the latest Pixel 5 alongside the Google Nest Audio, Chromecast, including Google TV and Google Pixel 4a. This year Google did not announce the Google Pixel 5 XL, as there is no such phone.
Google Pixel 5 is a unique creation that is, in some ways, an upgrade on Google Pixel 4. Below we will focus on the new Pixel 5 and run you through all the key details about this new phone so far. Including, what it looks like, how much it will cost, and what are the specs that you can expect for your money.
Google Pixel 5 Price and Release Date
This phone costs $699 / £599 / AU$999. The company has confirmed that this smartphone is coming to the UK, US, and Australia, and you can pre-register it now directly from the Google online store.
Google Pixel 5 will be available in the UK, Australia, and the US on October 15. Several retailers in all three markets have confirmed the deals.
Google Pixel 5 Display and Design
The phone design is what you see above. Google Pixel 5 comes in two colors options with unique names: Just Black (that is just black) and Sorta Sage (green color). The body of Pixel 5 is made of recycled aluminum, which is striking as many smartphones have plastic and glass back.
Well, the main reason that metal is hardly used is because you cannot use wireless charging within the metal. Yet this smartphone has this feature because there is a small hole on the top of the wireless charging coil, and it is coated with the resin and painted over it to match the aluminum.
Google Pixel 5 is IPX8 water-resistant; it means that you are able to sink this phone in water for about half an hour. This smartphone weighs around 151 grams, and it has the dimensions of 144.7 x 70.4 x 8mm.
This phone comes with a 6-inch full HD screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2340, and it has an OLED panel.
The company has included a 90Hz refresh rate here, so the screen looks smoother than many other smartphones with smoother transitions and scrolling. That said, this is not as good as some high-end devices that feature the 120 Hz refresh rate.
Google Pixel 5 also comes with the USB-C charging port at the bottom of the device, but there is no 3.5mm jack on the phone.
Unlike Pixel 4, Google Pixel 5 comes with the fingerprint scanner, which is on the rear phone. Google has dropped the 3D face unlock tech that was placed at the top of the bezel on last year’s device.
Google Pixel 5 Camera
There are few in the camera for this Google Pixel 5. It comes with a 12.2MP dual-pixel shooter with a 1.4μm pixel width, and also has a 16MP with the ultra-wide shooter.
Google replaces the telephoto shot on last year’s Pixel 4, which some people might miss, but it is likely that you will enjoy the wide camera more for everyday usage.
However, Google Pixel 5 has an impressive portrait and night sight modes. We have also found similar cameras on previous smartphones, and it performs amazingly, so we are hoping for a similar result here.
On the front side of the phone, you will find the 8MP selfie camera. It is similar to the previous Pixel 4, which we have found to perform very well.
Google Pixel 5 Performance and Specs
Unlike the previous Pixel phone, this phone does not feature the high-end chipset you would expect. Instead, Google has chosen the processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, which will not be the fastest as the chipset you find in these phones, such as Samsung Note 20 Ultra or OnePlus 8 Pro.
Though, the smartphones we have seen running this processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G have been powerful enough for day to day tasks. So we hope it is a similar story with this smartphone when we are able to try this phone out.
This phone comes with 8GB of ram and 128GB of storage. There is no microSD card support, and the company has yet to announce other storage variants also for this phone, so you will be limited to just 128GB.
Google Pixel 5 battery comes in 4,080mAh, and Google has included wireless charging as well. It also has a reverse charging feature, so you use this phone to charge supported devices.
Pixel 5 supports 18W fast-charging, and the correct charger is able to reach top speed in the box.
The company also claims that Pixel 5 will last a full day with a single charge. Though the previous Pixel battery life was not that impressive, so we are hoping that the company has improved things here.
Also, you get 5G enabled on this smartphone as well but remember that you will need to have the 5G contract and live in a place that has 5G connectivity.
This smartphone comes running Android 11 out of the box; it is Google’s latest version of the operating system. Well, you can expect, Google Pixel 5 will get the software updates over the next couple of years.
Moreover, there are some improvements to Google’s app; you can get on the device. For example – The recorder app- this app can record voice notes and transcribes them automatically.
