Deepika’s Chhapaak crashes, Devgn's Tanhaji grabs box office

The big clash between Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak and Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is over about a week of their releases. It is now clear which movie dominated the box office.

Om Raut directorial Tanhaji grabbed Rs 116 crore in the first week and the second week will judge where the movie will go.

Meanwhile, Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak performed below expectation at the box office and its lifetime earnings could end up at just Rs 35 crore.

Tanhaji reached the lifetime figure of Chhapaak in only two days even though both the films are of different genres.

Tanhaji is based on a historical drama depicting times of the unsung warrior with the same name while Chhapaak is a real-life story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

Tanhaji Malusare was a commander in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army. The role is played by Ajay Devgn. Kajo plays the role of his wife Savitribai and Saif Ali Khan comes as the antagonist Udaybhan Rathod.

The movie is tax-free in Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Devgn thanked the state chief minister for making watching the movie cheaper. He tweeted, “Thank you Shri Yogi Adityanathji for making #TanhajiTheUnsungWarrior Tax-Free in Uttar Pradesh. I would also be delighted Sir if you watched our film @myogiadityanath #TanhajiUnitesIndia.”

In Chhapaak, Deepika padukone playes the role of Laxmi Agarwal. The male lead opposite her is Vikrant Massey. The film was made tax-free in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Film critics believe the film crashed due to Deepika’s visit to the JNU amid protests of students. However, money could be recovered from other avenues like OTT platforms and satellite music.
