The CPI(M)-led LDF government in Kerala is taking all the required measures for the opening of the Lord Ayyappa temple today evening for the two-month long Mandalam Makaravilakku pilgrim season.
The portals of the hill shrine, the Sabarimala temple, are located in a reserve forest in Western Ghats in the district of Pathanamthitta.
Amid tight security the 18 holy steps of sanctum sanctorum would be opened at 5 pm for padi puja and darshan.
Devotees have started pouring in from various parts of southern India at the Nilackal and Pamba. They will be allowed by 2 pm to leave for the shrine.
Last year frenzied protests by BJP workers and right outfits were witnessed at the temple site following the decision of LDF government to allow women of all age groups to offer prayers citing the September 28, 2018 verdict of Supreme Court.
Traditionally women in the menstruating age group had been barred to enter the shrine.
Devaswom minister Kadakampally Surendran said the shrine is not a place for activists and government should not encourage such women who visit for publicity.
Meanwhile, social activist and Bhumata bridge leader, Trupti Desai, said she woulod be visiting the shrine on Sunday.
Desai was stopped at Kochi airport last year and not allowed to offer prayers.
Surendran added that women like Desai should not use opportunity to exhibit strength.
He said, “If someone thinks that they can exploit the devotees by spreading lies and turn them against the government, let me tell you, it’s not going to happen.”
