Former military dictator of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, is likely to return back to his country on May 1.
In 2016 Musharraf left for Dubai seeking medical treatment, but since then has not returned to Pakistan. He is facing high treason case of March 2014.
The 75-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Dubai last month after reaction from a rare disease for the treatment of which he left Pakistan.
His laywer Salman Safdar said Saturday, “Despite his deteriorating medical condition, the former military ruler is determined to appear before the court that had summoned him for the hearing scheduled for May 2.”
The three-member bench of Pakistan’s apex court is headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.
The bench said if Musharraf fails to be physically present at the court on May 2, he will lose the right to record a statement under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedures.
Treason case against Musharraf was filed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government over his imposition of extra-constitutional emergency in November 2007.
A special court has declared the former dictator as offender and ordered confiscation of his property on the ground of no-show.
The Supreme Court later cancelled passport and national identity of Musharraf too.
Musharraf ruled the country as a dictator from 1999 to 2008. If convicted he may face death penalty or life imprisonment.
