The first humanitarian aid has arrived in Venezuela even though President Nicolas Maduro has blocked the border with Colombia. Opposition leader Juan Guaido confirmed Monday a cargo has been delivered but without mentioning how he has received it.
Guaido self-declared himself as legitimate leader of Venezuela last month and he is being backed by United States and other Latin America countries.
He tweeted a photo revealing white pots of vitamin and nutritional supplements have been delivered.
Monday evening the 35-year-old said in a televised message, “Today we delivered the first donation, or the first cargo of humanitarian aid, albeit on a small scale, because you know they have blocked the border for the time being.”
Maduro meanwhile said the humanitarian aid is part of US-orchestrated strategy to overthrow him and he won’t allow this to transpire.
Last week senior US officials said Venezuela is in need to of humanitarian aid and they are preparing to deliver supplies through Colombian border town of Cucuta.
Guaido appealed to the army to allow the aid to get delivered to Venezuela through collection points in Brazil, a Caribbean island and Cucuta.
Brazil has not commented on the collection point of humanitarian aid in his country for Venezuela.
International humanitarian aid coordinator for the opposition, Lester Toledo, said Netherlands has approved speaking with local governments of Curacao and Aruba to set up aid center.
